A panther with high melanin has a coat where black overwhelms his usual spotted pattern. Often considered the stuff of legend in the past, we now have several black panthers in captivity and they are occasionally photographed in the wild as well. Being members of the panther family, they are called black leopards in Africa and black jaguars in the Americas, after the different species they are part of. Both are incredible hunters and possess an almost magical aura.
