Living wild on Sable Island, a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, the Sable Island Horses are small and hardy.  They have to withstand harsh winter weather, so they usually stand only 13h to 14h tall with broad chests, short legs, and thick manes and tails, better to protect them from the cold.  They are mainly solid colors, with about half being bays with the remainder being chestnut, palomino or black.  They were proven to be genetically unique enough to warrant protection and the their island is now a protected refuge area, free from human intervention.  This one sports a sunburned bay coat as she dances in the summer surf on the island.  This is the first time Breyer has represented this rare breed.
