The okapi is a neat animal that seems to take its conformation and style from other animals. It is a giraffid, a small relative of the giraffe, which explains its longish neck, ossicones (small horns on the males) and long tongue. The okapi has a tongue that can reach 18" long! It also features zebra-like stripes on his legs and hindquarters. Unusual in the animal world, it paces, putting weight on both of its left legs and then both of its right legs when moving faster than a walk, while most animals move alternate legs (trot).
