Here's something for the collector who loves conversation pieces and hard-to-find items. This Hartland Thoroughbred was produced in sandy bay with one hind sock from 1988-1990 (and reappeared in the 1992 JC Penney Christmas catalog). The picture frame boxes were only used from 1984-1989, so this guy can be dated to 1988 or 1989 production. The picture frame box was an ingenious design - The cardboard outer frame held the horse suspended between two sheets of molded plastic, allowing him to be seen from both sides, but still protecting him from damage. Unfortunately, they often didn't stand up well on store shelves, so the box style was discontinued. It still remains one of the prettiest display boxes from any manufacturer.
This guy is still in his window box. What a find! Finding these boxes intact is super rare. This guy appears to have beautiful body shading with a speckly coat, darker face, and painted sock. The box shows minor wear, but is a beautiful display piece in itself!
