War Admiral is a name very familiar to followers of Thoroughbred racing! A son of the amazing Man O' War, bred by Man O' War's owner Sam Riddle, War Admiral looked more like his dam Brushup, but ran like his sire. He also had Man O' War's penchant for acting up in the starting gate. His antics delayed the start of the Kentucky Derby by several minutes, but then he led wire-to-wire. He followed that performance with more shenanigans at the gate in Belmont the following week, but won by a head. In the Preakness, he delayed the start by eight minutes as he broke out of the gate over and over, then stumbled at the start. He went on to win that race by three lengths, making him the fourth Triple Crown winner in history. It was only in the winner's circle that it was discovered he'd cut himself when he stumbled, an injury severe enough that he spent the summer away from the track recovering. His return to racing that fall gave him a record of 8 wins from 8 starts, stopped only in the match race against his nephew Seabiscuit. War Admiral then enjoyed a long retirement at stud, siring over 40 stakes winners and continuing to be a prominent name in famous Thoroughbreds today, including Swaps, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed. His name is included in American Pharoah's pedigree eight times! After his passing, he was buried alongside his sire Man O' War at Kentucky Horse Park.

Breyer honored War Admiral with this Christmas ornament in 2003 - 2004 to celebrate the release of the movie Seabiscuit.
