Swaps was a famous California-bred thoroughbred whose fans nicknamed him The California Comet. With Willie Shoemaker aboard, Swaps won the 1955 Kentucky Derby, along with a host of other big-name races, despite a recurring hoof ailment. He had an intense, fan-pleasing rivalry with the horse Nashua, often trading wins as they raced against each other repeatedly. Swaps was named Horse of the Year as a 4-year-old in 1956, but ended the year with a near-fatal leg fracture. His owners fought to save him by casting the leg and keeping him stalled. When he re-injured the cast leg not long after, the owners of his rival Nashua had a custom-made sling sent to him with their wishes for a solid recovery. It worked, and Swaps healed! He then retired to stud.
Breyer's portrait of Swaps was sculpted by Maureen Love, originally for Hagen Renaker. Breyer carried it in his chestnut coat with diagonal socks and tiny star, from 1975-1990.
